GLM Congo Strengthens Staff Oversight with TimeMoto

Grand Lacs Motors Congo (GLM Congo) is a resilient, family-owned Toyota dealership operating in the heart of Africa. More than just a seller of vehicles, it runs a multi-site operation offering new car sales, aftersales service, and a parts and accessories network that spans international borders.

Founded in 1990 as Kivu Motor, GLM Congo is based in Goma, in the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Now a Toyota dealership, it offers new vehicle sales, servicing, and parts. In 2019, Quentin Otjacques joined his parents in leading the company through continued growth despite regional challenges.

With 85 permanent employees across three sites—Goma, Bukavu, and Kalemie—GLM Congo combines automotive sales with full-service workshops and parts warehousing. Its accessory distribution network, supported by partner company Blue Emporium, extends internationally, primarily importing from Australia.

“We have less micromanagement, simplified and faster reporting, and a better overview of our staff’s worked hours.”

Despite ongoing political instability in the region GLM Congo has shown remarkable resilience. “We had to relocate our head office temporarily, but a few months later, we returned,” noted Managing Partner Quentin Otjacques. Now planning a fourth site, the company continues to expand, underscoring its long-term commitment to business continuity and customer service.

One area that demanded improvement was employee punctuality, particularly at remote branches without constant managerial oversight. Previously reliant on manual attendance checks by HR or security staff, GLM Congo transitioned to TimeMoto Cloud, installing four Time Clocks across its sites. Staff now clock in and out using fingerprint recognition or RFID cards, with mobile app access for on-the-move personnel. “Some of our mechanics use RFID cards because their hands are often covered in grease or paint,” Otjacques explained—highlighting the system’s practical flexibility in a hands-on work environment.

Less micromanagement

With the implementation of TimeMoto, GLM Congo has seen immediate internal improvements. “We have less micromanagement, simplified and faster reporting, and a better overview of our staff’s worked hours,” Otjacques noted. The company now saves between 30 to 60 minutes per day at each site just on time tracking processes.

The feature Otjacques relies on most is the weekly clock-in and clock-out report. “It’s very useful already, even though we’re not using the system to its full potential yet,” he admitted. Planned next steps include configuring break tracking to gain a more detailed picture of working hours and to optimize absence management.

Effective support

In addition to praising TimeMoto’s intuitive interface and the quality of the hardware, Otjacques highlights the standout customer support experience: “Quick and efficient—nothing to complain about. It’s very rare to have such effective support, and we have around fifty suppliers of all kinds.”

Looking back, Otjacques sees clear added value in their investment. “TimeMoto has improved our business in many ways. For us, it’s the best value for money when it comes to managing staff and their potential.”
